This week, Historic Bremen purchased the old Lutheran Church on South Street known as The Gathering Place. The property had been owned and cared for by Kent Koontz since 2002. In addition, for the past 60 days, a volunteer group has been renovating the basement rental space, and their work is slated to be complete on March 1.
A ribbon-cutting and reception will take place on Sunday, March 8 at 3pm. The community is invited to attend. Refreshments will be provided.
The basement space was last renovated in the 1980s by St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. The volunteers, led by Matt Van Soest, have dramatically transformed the space into a “vintage modern” venue highlighting the original 1875 construction. “We believe the room will be one of the most attractive and affordable spaces for rent in Bremen,” Matt stated.

One fascinating detailed uncovered in the renovation was evidence of a fire in 1905 that was swiftly put out by the Bremen Fire Department. This and all the original 1875 beams will now be visible in the finished basement space.
